Book Review: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (Why KS3 Students Will Love It)
If you’re looking for a book that’s fast-paced, action-packed and a little bit terrifying in the best possible way, The Hunger Games might be exactly what you need.
Even if you’ve seen the film, the book is well worth a read. In fact, it’s even better. Here’s why I think The Hunger Games is one of the most exciting, clever and downright addictive books you could pick up in Years 7–9.
✅ What Is The Hunger Games About?
Set in a future world where the country of Panem forces 24 teenagers to fight to the death on live TV, the story follows Katniss Everdeen, a brave, resourceful 16-year-old who volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in the deadly Hunger Games.
Thrown into an arena full of traps, danger and ruthless opponents, Katniss has to rely on her instincts, survival skills and clever thinking to stay alive.
✅ Why KS3 Students Will Love It
It’s seriously exciting: From the opening chapters to the final showdown, there’s barely a moment where something dramatic isn’t happening.
It makes you think: The book isn’t only about fighting, it’s about friendship, courage, loyalty and standing up to unfair rules.
The characters are brilliant: Katniss is one of the strongest, smartest female leads in fiction, and Peeta, Gale and Rue are unforgettable too.
It’s perfect for fans of dystopian stories: If you liked Divergent, The Maze Runner or The Giver, you’ll love this.
✅ Favourite Quote
“May the odds be ever in your favour.”
It’s said like a cheery catchphrase by the people running the Games, but in the story, it’s a chilling reminder that most of the tributes won’t make it out alive.
✅ Would I Recommend It?
Definitely! It’s one of those books you’ll pick up thinking I’ll just read a chapter and suddenly find yourself still glued to it an hour later. Plus, it’s part of a trilogy, so if you love it, there’s Catching Fire and Mockingjay waiting for you too.
Final Thoughts
If you’re in Year 7, 8 or 9 and you like action, adventure and stories that make you think, The Hunger Games is a brilliant choice. It’s exciting, dramatic and one of those books people end up talking about long after they’ve finished it.
